The subjects I work with as an artist have changed as my life has changed. While single my friends dominated my life and I painted them. When I married and became a mother my private life was more private and I focused on the world around me often depicting Urban life and landscape. My current work examines Mount Rainer as a subject. Artists throughout history have been attracted by volcanoes like Mount Fuji or Mount Vesuvius. I have looked at many of these works and taken the work of Japanese wood block artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who created 36 Views of mount Fuji as inspiration for this series of work. I too am working in wood block, enjoying the textures the wood brings to the medium. Mount Rainier is within my daily view as I do my business around town making what might otherwise seem like mundane life an integrated part of my work life. Beautiful compositions with the mountain in them catch me at every bend in the road.
